How a Rugged Radios Communication System Works
A complete setup may combine three components:
- Intercom — connects driver and co-driver or passengers inside the vehicle through helmet audio.
- Radio — can connect the vehicle to crew or other vehicles where permitted. Check the exact unit's local certification and programming.
- Helmet kit — speakers and microphone inside the helmet that connect to a compatible intercom.

Rugged Radios Mobile & Handheld Radios
Mobile and handheld radios connect crews where transmitting is permitted. A US-programmed or GMRS radio is not legal for NZ or AU operation; GMRS is not a local radio service. Harris Race Radios™ supplies appropriate locally certified CB radio options, but not every Rugged model is a local UHF CB unit. Check the physical radio, certification, programming and intended jurisdiction.
Digital vs Analog — Why It Matters
Compare digital and analog audio, channel compatibility and any event frequency requirements. A digital or dual-band feature does not establish CB certification.
RDM-DB — In-Vehicle Mobile Radio
Explore the RDM-DB and compatible mounting options. Its model name and digital/analog capabilities do not establish lawful UHF CB use in NZ or AU; confirm the exact unit and programming first.
R1 Handheld — Crew Radio Option

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Rugged Radios legal to use in Australia and New Zealand?
Not automatically. Check the exact transmitting radio's certification, programming and intended frequencies for its country of operation, plus category and event rules. We supply appropriate locally certified CB options. GMRS is not a local radio service, and US-programmed and GMRS radios are not legal for NZ or AU operation.
What is the difference between an intercom and a radio?
An intercom connects people inside a vehicle through headset or helmet audio. A radio can connect the vehicle to outside crew where transmission is permitted.
Can I use Rugged Radios at Finke Desert Race or AORC events?
Ask the event organiser about permitted communication equipment and frequencies for your class. We can advise on compatible intercom, antenna and suitable radio choices, but do not guarantee event approval.
Do Rugged Radios systems work with Bell or Stilo helmets?
Helmet-kit options exist; check the exact Bell or Stilo helmet and the intercom connector before ordering.
