What Is a HANS Device? How an FHR Works
Tegan HarrisA HANS device is a type of frontal head restraint (FHR) used with a compatible motorsport helmet, anchor posts, tethers, harness and seat. Its purpose is to limit the helmet's forward movement relative to the driver's torso during a frontal impact. It can reduce the risk of certain head and neck injuries, but no restraint prevents every injury or makes a driver safe on its own.

How does it work?
A HANS-style device rests over the shoulders. Compatible helmet anchors and tethers connect the helmet to the restraint. Correctly routed shoulder harness straps hold the device in position, so the helmet's forward travel is limited in a frontal impact. The helmet, anchors, tethers, harness, seat and vehicle installation need to work together. A frontal restraint is not a substitute for suitable lateral head support.
Is HANS the same as FHR?
FHR means frontal head restraint. HANS is a particular type and is often used as a shorthand for the wider category. Other designs, including Simpson Hybrid and NecksGen models, have different fit and connection requirements. Do not assume parts or approvals are interchangeable across devices.
Does every driver need one?
Requirements depend on the discipline, category and event. Check the exact device's physical label and the current MotorSport NZ, Motorsport Australia or event rules before racing. An FIA or SFI marking on a model name does not establish eligibility for every event or every unit.
What should I check before choosing?
- The maker's sizing and device-angle guidance for your actual seating position.
- The exact helmet's approved anchors and the correct compatible tethers.
- Harness routing, shoulder-strap compatibility, seat clearance and manufacturer installation instructions.
- Condition and any inspection or recertification requirements for the physical device and its standard. Do not assume a universal five-year tether replacement or device-expiry rule.
