HANS Device vs Simpson Hybrid vs Neckgen: Which Head Restraint Is Right for You?

My Store Admin

Choosing a head-and-neck restraint starts with the standard your category requires, then the exact model's fit and compatibility with your helmet, harness and seating position. Compare HANS devices, Simpson Hybrid and NecksGen for New Zealand and Australian motorsport.

FIA and SFI: The Key Difference

HANS devices are FIA-approved. Simpson Hybrid restraints are available in FIA and SFI versions, depending on the model. NecksGen restraints are available in SFI only. These are not interchangeable approval claims: if your category requires FIA, an SFI-only device does not meet that requirement.

Verify the physical label on the exact device and check current MotorSport NZ, Motorsport Australia, speedway or other applicable category and event rules before buying. Approval to a standard does not mean automatic acceptance in every event or configuration.

HANS Devices

A HANS device sits over the shoulders and connects to a compatible helmet through tethers and anchor posts. It is designed to limit forward head movement in a frontal impact when used with the specified harness and seating configuration. Compare model-specific size, angle, weight, construction and tether requirements.

Choose the angle for your actual seat recline and harness geometry, not simply the name of your discipline. Use the manufacturer's sizing and installation instructions for the exact device.

Simpson Hybrid

Simpson Hybrid offers an alternative restraint layout. Select the exact FIA or SFI version required by your category, then check its sizing, body straps, helmet attachment and harness requirements against the manufacturer's instructions.

Try the complete setup in your car when possible: check comfort, permitted head movement, cockpit clearance and entry and exit. Do not assume every Hybrid model has identical fit, certification or belt requirements.

NecksGen

NecksGen restraints are SFI-only options. Consider them where your category permits the exact SFI standard and configuration. They are not an FIA alternative where FIA approval is required.

Check the selected model's size, helmet hardware, tether system and permitted harness width and routing. Assess comfort and clearance in your actual driving position rather than assuming a universal comfort advantage over another restraint.

Category acceptance Check exact device label and current rules Choose the required FIA or SFI version and check current rules Use only where the exact SFI device is permitted
Fit Model-specific size and seating angle Model-specific size and strap adjustment Model-specific size and fit instructions
Harness and helmet Check belt geometry, posts and tethers Check model-specific harness and helmet attachment requirements Check model-specific belt and helmet hardware requirements
Comfort and usability Assess with your helmet, race suit, harness and seat; no single design is most comfortable for every driver.

Which Should You Choose?

Start with your current category's permitted standard. Next compare the exact device's fit and installation requirements with your helmet, harness and seat. Finally consider comfort during your expected stint, cockpit clearance, entry and exit, weight and budget. A brand-level comparison cannot establish that one device provides superior or equivalent protection in every situation.

No restraint eliminates injury risk. Follow manufacturer instructions and check the physical label, condition, tethers, anchors and applicable servicing or recertification requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all three restraint ranges FIA-approved?

No. HANS devices are FIA-approved; Simpson Hybrid is available in FIA and SFI versions depending on the model; NecksGen is SFI only.

Can I use NecksGen where FIA approval is required?

No. An SFI-only NecksGen device does not satisfy an FIA requirement. Check the exact category rules before ordering.

Is a HANS device better than a Simpson Hybrid?

Choose by the required approval, exact model's fit and compatibility with your helmet, harness and seat. Neither is universally the best fit for every driver.

Which restraint is most comfortable?

Comfort depends on the driver, model and complete cockpit setup. Compare devices in your actual driving position rather than relying on a brand-level ranking.
