MyChron 5 Setup Guide

AiM MyChron 5 Setup Guide

This guide covers installation and setup of the AiM MyChron 5 for kart racers in New Zealand and Australia. It includes mounting, RPM installation, temperature sensors, GPS setup, and first-time configuration.

What you need

  • AiM MyChron 5 dash
  • RPM sensor
  • Water temperature or CHT sensor
  • GPS05 or GPS08 module (depending on version)
  • Zip ties and electrical tape
  • 8mm spanner

1. Mounting the MyChron 5

  1. Attach the MyChron 5 bracket to the steering wheel.
  2. Angle the display slightly upward for better visibility.
  3. Tighten the bracket screws securely.
  4. Turn the wheel fully left and right to ensure no interference.

Tip: The MyChron 5 LCD screen benefits from a slight upward tilt in bright sunlight.

2. Installing the RPM sensor

  1. Wrap the RPM sensor wire 5–7 turns around the spark plug lead.
  2. Keep the wraps tight and evenly spaced.
  3. Secure the wire with electrical tape.
  4. Route the cable away from the exhaust and moving parts.
  5. Plug the connector into the RPM port on the MyChron 5.

If RPM is unstable: Add more wraps around the plug lead.

3. Installing the water temperature sensor

  1. Remove the radiator hose near the cylinder head.
  2. Install the AiM hose adaptor with the sensor port.
  3. Slide the hose over both ends of the adaptor and tighten clamps.
  4. Screw the AiM water temp sensor into the adaptor (snug, not overtightened).
  5. Route the cable neatly and away from heat.
  6. Plug the sensor into the CHT/WT port.

Recommended temperature ranges

Engine Ideal water temp
Rotax 50–55°C
Vortex 45–50°C
Briggs 60–70°C

4. Installing the GPS module

The MyChron 5 uses a 10 Hz GPS module (GPS05 or GPS08 depending on version).

  1. Mount the GPS module on the nassau panel with the AiM logo facing upward.
  2. Keep it away from metal brackets and ignition wiring.
  3. Secure with double-sided tape and zip ties.
  4. Route the cable along the chassis.
  5. Plug into the EXP port.

5. First-time configuration

  1. Power on the MyChron 5.
  2. Select your engine type.
  3. Choose your sensor configuration.
  4. Enter wheel circumference if using a wheel speed sensor.
  5. Allow the GPS to lock (green icon).
  6. Select your track or let the MyChron auto-detect it.

6. Testing your installation

With the kart running:

  • RPM should rise smoothly with throttle.
  • Water temperature should increase gradually.
  • GPS icon should turn green once locked.

On track:

  • Lap times should appear after the first full lap.
  • Max RPM and temperature values should look realistic.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No RPM: Add more wraps, check RPM port.
  • No water temp: Check coolant level and sensor port.
  • No GPS: Move module higher and away from metal.
