Harris Race Radios™ helps drivers choose helmets for Speedway, dirt track, off-road and rally by matching the correct discipline, physical certification label, fit and communications system. These disciplines do not share one helmet rule.
NZ & Australian Speedway Helmet Rules
For Speedway car racing, choose a helmet carrying an accepted motorsport certification and meeting the helmet-style requirements of your specific class. Snell SA2020 and SA2025 are the current eligible SA standards. SA2010 and SA2015 are no longer eligible for NZ or Australian Speedway; the Australian SA2015 cut-off was 1 July 2026. These Speedway restrictions must not be applied to MotorSport NZ or Motorsport Australia circuit, rally or other competition. Purchasers must check the current rules themselves for their governing body, grade and event before buying.
Speedway New Zealand
Speedway NZ's 17 August 2026 update confirms SA2015 has expired and adds Snell SA2025, FIA 8859-2024, FIA 8859-2024 ABP and FIA 8860-2018 for car classes. SA2020 remains an option. Check the exact helmet label and your class's current full rules. Read the Speedway NZ helmet standards update.
Australian Speedway
Rule 15.7 specifies full-face helmets and lists Snell SA2025, SA2020, FIA 8858-2010, FIA 8859-2015, FIA 8860-2010 and FIA 8860-2018. SA2015 can no longer be used after 1 July 2026. Higher FIA-specification helmets are also options for Australian Speedway; confirm the exact newer or ABP homologation against the current class rule before ordering rather than assuming every FIA label is interchangeable. Purchasers must check which rules apply to their particular grade.
Snell M motorcycle labels are not substitutes for the listed SA or FIA requirements. Other off-road, rally and motorcycle categories have separate rules. Compare the physical label, helmet condition and any FHR requirements with the current rules before racing.
Fire Protection Matters
Fire exposure is a serious consideration in Speedway. Prioritise a class-eligible motorsport helmet and its specified fire-resistant lining, together with correctly specified racewear, balaclava, gloves and other required safety equipment. Good fit and correct use matter alongside certification. No helmet is fireproof, and shell material or a higher price alone does not establish better fire protection.
Wired Helmets for Speedway & Off-Road Radio
Match the right helmet to your receiver or intercom, rather than choosing a helmet solely to fit existing audio. For NZ Speedway one-way Race Control and Australia's Race Management Channel (RMC), clear compatible helmet audio helps drivers hear officials' instructions. Check permitted communications, connectors and class requirements.
Brands
- Pyrotect: compare full-face SA2025 and SA2020 models, wiring and air-system options. Pyrotect open-face helmets may be permitted in some junior Speedway grades. The purchaser must check the current rules themselves for their exact grade, age group, governing body and event, including the permitted helmet style and certification, before buying.
- Impact: compare carbon and composite off-road options, exact labels and wiring.
- Roux by Pininfarina: made in Italy; compare R1-F communications and R1-N configurations and exact labels.
- Bell: compare full-face motorsport models, fit and the exact homologation.
