The Rugged Radios POINT5 GPI UHF CB off-road antenna is a strong, spring-loaded aerial for genuine off-road vehicles in New Zealand and Australia. Its rugged construction and sprung section help it take the knocks and low tree branches encountered on demanding tracks, rather than being selected only for road-going looks.

POINT5 is a ground-plane-independent (GPI), also described as no-ground-plane (NGP), tuned whip antenna. Match it to your UHF CB radio, mounting position and installation before ordering.

Spring-loaded construction for real off-road use

For 4WDs and off-road vehicles travelling through scrub and under low branches, the spring-loaded section allows the aerial to give under contact. This makes POINT5 a practical choice where knocks and vibration are part of the journey. It is rugged, not indestructible: choose a mounting position that protects the antenna and inspect the mount and cable after a substantial impact.

A sound vehicle-to-vehicle radio link helps groups coordinate convoy stops, track obstacles and recovery arrangements. Radio setup, antenna placement, mounts, coaxial cable and connectors all matter. Terrain and obstacles affect range, so we do not promise a fixed communication distance.

What ground-plane-independent means

A conventional ground-plane-dependent antenna uses a suitable conducting surface as part of its antenna system. A GPI design does not rely on a large metal vehicle roof to provide that ground plane. That makes the design useful when selecting an aerial for installations without a suitable metal roof or ground-plane surface.

GPI does not mean every bracket, base or mounting location is interchangeable, or that the mount and connections can be ignored. Nearby metalwork, mounting position and cable condition still affect the installed system. Read our ground plane and ground-plane-independent aerial advice, including the explanation of what an antenna ground plane does.

Installation, mounts and cable checks

Send us your radio model, vehicle, proposed antenna location, existing base and connector type. Clear photos help us identify the parts required. The vehicle photos are installation examples, not a promise that brackets, cables, lights or other equipment are included. Confirm package contents and any separately required installation parts with our team.

Read our antenna installation, tuning and testing guide for mounting, cable routing and installed-system checks. Check the antenna and connection before transmitting, especially after removing equipment for transport or storage.

The supplier feature diagram in the gallery carries US GMRS wording. This listing is for NZ/AU UHF CB off-road applications; the artwork is not a claim that a US-programmed radio is suitable for your local system. Have the supplied antenna and radio configuration matched to your use.

Frequently asked questions

What does GPI mean?

GPI means ground-plane-independent. This antenna design does not rely on a large metal vehicle roof to provide a ground plane, but it still needs a suitable mount, cable and installation.

Why choose POINT5 for genuine off-road vehicles?

Its strong construction and spring-loaded section help it take knocks and low tree-branch contact on demanding tracks. It is not indestructible; protect the installation and inspect it after impacts.

Does it fit any mount?

No. GPI does not make every base or bracket interchangeable. Have the antenna mounting arrangement, cable and radio connector checked together.

Are the vehicle accessories shown included?

The gallery shows example installations. Brackets, cables, driving lights and other vehicle equipment are not implied to be included. Confirm the supplied package and any required additional parts.

How far will it communicate?

There is no fixed range promise. Terrain, obstacles, mounting position, radio setup and the other station's equipment affect the link.

Why does a gallery image mention GMRS?

It is supplier artwork using US terminology. This listing is positioned for NZ and Australian UHF CB off-road use, with antenna and radio-system matching.

Can Harris Race Radios help with installation?

Yes. Our radio-engineering team can advise on aerial selection, mounting, coaxial cable, connectors and system checks. Send your radio model and installation photos to Rex Harris.
