The Rugged Radios M102-D-RED is Harris Race Radios™' go-to low-gain dynamic microphone, extensively used in circuit racing, rally, off-road and across motorsport disciplines. This red, 150 Ω dynamic microphone suits compatible helmet and headset communications in high-noise environments. Match the microphone type, impedance and mounting arrangement to your existing audio system.

A go-to microphone for circuit racing, rally and off-road

In circuit racing, clear driver–pit speech helps crews relay developing problems, coordinate pit stops and pass useful instructions. Timely communication about a fluid leak, tyre problem or loose panel can help protect the driver and the team's equipment.

In rally, intelligible driver–co-driver intercom audio supports timely pace notes and instructions. In off-road motorsport, clear driver–navigator and driver–crew communications help coordinate navigation, vehicle problems and pit support. M102-D-RED is a widely used choice across these motorsport applications where the communications interface requires a compatible low-gain dynamic microphone.

A replacement microphone should be matched to the complete system, not chosen only because it looks like the original. Low gain describes the microphone's response, not a guarantee that engine, wind or background noise disappears. Microphone position, the cover, wiring, interface and system settings all affect the speech heard at the other end. This is a replacement component, not a complete helmet kit, headset or intercom.

Compatibility and installation

Confirm the headset or helmet-audio model, original microphone markings, mounting arrangement, connection details and radio or intercom interface before ordering. Dynamic, electret, amplified and non-amplified microphones are not automatically interchangeable. A matching physical shape alone does not establish electrical compatibility.

For an electret system, compare the M560-E EM56 non-amplified electret microphone with our team. It is a different microphone type, not a direct substitute or a universal upgrade for this dynamic model.

Send clear photographs of the original microphone, mounting and connections if you are unsure. We can advise on the correct replacement and installation, then help check the transmitted or intercom audio before the equipment returns to use. Do not change a helmet's protective structure to fit audio equipment; follow the helmet and communications equipment manufacturer's installation guidance.

Wind protection and related parts

The foam microphone muff lists M101 and M102 microphones among its applications. It is sold separately; confirm fit on the exact microphone and boom arrangement. A suitable cover helps manage wind at the microphone but does not make different microphone types interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

What type of microphone is M102-D-RED?

It is a red, low-gain dynamic microphone with a listed impedance of 150 Ω, for compatible helmet and headset audio systems.

Is it used in circuit racing, rally and off-road?

Yes. M102-D-RED is extensively used in circuit racing, rally, off-road and across motorsport disciplines. It is Harris Race Radios™' go-to dynamic microphone where the helmet or headset audio system is compatible.

Will it replace any helmet or headset microphone?

No. Confirm the required microphone type, impedance, mounting and connections against the existing audio system. Similar appearance is not proof of compatibility.

Can it replace an electret microphone?

Do not assume so. Dynamic and electret microphones have different interface requirements. Have your radio or intercom and audio wiring checked before changing type.

Does low gain eliminate background noise?

No. Microphone position, wind protection, wiring and system settings all affect usable speech. This microphone is not a promise of complete noise cancellation.

Which cover should I compare?

Our foam microphone muff lists M101 and M102 applications. It is a separate accessory; confirm the fit on your microphone and boom arrangement.

Can Harris Race Radios help install and test it?

Yes. Send your equipment model numbers, original microphone markings and photographs of the mount and connections. Our radio-engineering team can advise on selection, installation and repairs.
