What Harness Standard Do You Need in NZ?
Motorsport New Zealand (MSNZ) requires FIA 8853-2016 homologated harnesses for most circuit racing, rally, and competitive categories. This is the current FIA standard and covers all harnesses stocked by Harris Race Radios.
Always check your specific series regulations — requirements vary by category and are updated each season. If you're unsure, contact our team and we'll confirm what your series requires before you buy.
Key NZ series and harness requirements (2025/26)
- NZ Rally Championship (NZRC): FIA 8853-2016, 6-point minimum, FHR/HANS required
- NZ Endurance Championship: FIA 8853-2016, 6-point minimum
- TOYOTA GAZOO Racing NZ: FIA 8853-2016, 6-point, FHR required
- Club circuit racing (MSNZ): FIA 8853-2016 minimum — check category regs
- Hill climb (MSNZ): FIA 8853-2016 minimum — check category regs
- Speedway / oval: SFI 16.1 accepted in some categories — check series regs
What Do NZ Scrutineers Check?
This is something overseas suppliers can't advise on. At NZ events, scrutineers typically check:
- Valid FIA 8853-2016 homologation label and gold hologram on the left shoulder strap
- Homologation expiry date has not passed
- All mounting hardware is correctly torqued to spec
- Strap geometry meets FIA Appendix J Article 253 requirements
- Crotch straps are not routed over the front of the seat
- Harness has not been involved in an impact
- FHR/HANS device is correctly paired with the harness
Harris Race Radios can advise on pre-event scrutineering preparation. Contact us before your event if you have any compliance questions.
2 Inch vs 3 Inch Webbing — Which Do You Need?
2" (50mm) webbing is required for use with FHR/HANS devices. It fits entirely within the iliac crest of the pelvis, allowing a tighter, safer fit and reducing the risk of submarining. For most NZ circuit and rally competitors using a HANS device, 2" webbing is the correct choice.
3" (75mm) webbing is used in some saloon and speedway applications where an FHR device is not required. It provides a wider contact area across the pelvis but cannot be worn as tightly as 2" webbing with an FHR.
How Many Points Do You Need?
- 6-point — required for most NZ circuit and rally categories. Two shoulder, two lap, two crotch straps.
- 5-point — accepted in some categories. Two shoulder, two lap, one crotch strap.
- 4 and 3-point — not accepted for most competitive NZ motorsport.
How Much Does a Racing Harness Cost in NZ?
FIA 8853-2016 racing harnesses in New Zealand range from approximately NZD $350 for entry-level RSA composite harnesses to NZD $900+ for premium Schroth harnesses with advanced adjustment systems. All prices include GST. Harris Race Radios can recommend the correct harness for your budget and series requirements — we won't upsell you to a harness you don't need.

RSA harnesses offer proven FIA 8853-2016 homologated safety at competitive price points. Available in Pro and ProLite configurations for circuit, endurance, saloon, and single-seater applications. A popular choice for NZ club competitors.
Do You Need a HANS Device?
Most MSNZ categories that require a racing harness also require a frontal head restraint (FHR/HANS device). The two work together — the 2" shoulder straps of the harness are specifically designed to interface with the FHR tethers. Using a 3" harness with an FHR device is not recommended and may not be compliant. See our HANS & FHR Devices range.
