What Harness Standard Do You Need in Australia?

Motorsport Australia (formerly CAMS) requires FIA 8853-2016 homologated harnesses for most circuit racing, rally, and competitive categories under Schedule J. This is the current FIA standard and covers all harnesses stocked by Harris Race Radios.

Always check the current Motorsport Australia Schedule J for your specific category before purchasing. If you're unsure, contact our team and we'll confirm compliance before you buy.

Key Australian series and harness requirements (2025/26)

  • Australian Rally Championship (ARC): FIA 8853-2016, 6-point minimum, FHR/HANS required
  • Supercars Championship: FIA 8853-2016, 6-point, FHR required
  • TCR Australia: FIA 8853-2016, 6-point minimum
  • S5000: FIA 8853-2016, 6-point, FHR required
  • Australian GT: FIA 8853-2016, 6-point minimum
  • Motorsport Australia club events: FIA 8853-2016 minimum — check category regs
  • Targa events: FIA 8853-2016 minimum — check event regs

What Do Australian Scrutineers Check?

At Motorsport Australia events, scrutineers typically check:

  • Valid FIA 8853-2016 homologation label and gold hologram on the left shoulder strap
  • Homologation expiry date has not passed
  • All mounting hardware is correctly torqued to specification
  • Strap geometry meets FIA Appendix J Article 253 requirements
  • Crotch straps are not routed over the front of the seat
  • Harness has not been involved in an impact
  • FHR/HANS device is correctly paired with the harness where required

Harris Race Radios can advise on pre-event scrutineering preparation for Australian events. Contact us before your event if you have compliance questions.

2 Inch vs 3 Inch Webbing — Which Do You Need?

2" (50mm) webbing is required for use with FHR/HANS devices and is the correct choice for most Australian circuit and rally competitors. It fits within the iliac crest of the pelvis, allowing a tighter, safer fit.

3" (75mm) webbing is used in some saloon and speedway applications where an FHR device is not required. Check your series regulations before selecting.

  • MSNZ-certified safety equipment examiners — we understand FIA compliance and can confirm your harness meets Motorsport Australia requirements before you buy
  • We race in the equipment we sell — Bathurst, ARC events, endurance racing
  • Fast AU shipping — tracked delivery to all Australian states and territories
  • Pre-event scrutineering advice — call us before your event with compliance questions
  • No upselling — we'll recommend the correct harness for your series and budget, not the most expensive one
