HANS Device Buying Guide NZ — What You Need to Know

What is a HANS Device?
HANS stands for Head And Neck Support. It is a Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) device — a U-shaped carbon fibre or composite collar that sits over your shoulders and connects to your helmet via tethers. In a frontal impact, the HANS device prevents your head from being thrown forward, dramatically reducing the risk of basilar skull fracture — the injury that killed Ayrton Senna and Dale Earnhardt.
HANS devices are now mandatory in most professional and club motorsport categories worldwide, including MSNZ and Motorsport Australia sanctioned events.
When is a HANS Device Required in NZ?
MSNZ requires an approved FHR/HANS device for most circuit racing and rally categories. As a general guide:
- Circuit Racing — required in most MSNZ sanctioned circuit categories
- Rally — required for MSNZ sanctioned rally events
- Endurance Racing — required in most endurance categories
- Speedway — check your specific Speedway category regulations
- Karting — generally not required; check your category

FIA Approval — What to Look For
Your HANS device must carry FIA 8858-2010 or FIA 8858-2002 approval to be accepted at MSNZ and Motorsport Australia sanctioned events. Do not purchase a HANS device without confirmed FIA approval — non-approved devices will not pass scrutineering.
HANS Sizing — How to Choose the Right Size
HANS devices are sized by neck circumference, not head size. Measure around the base of your neck:

If you're right on the boundary, contact Aaron Harris for advice. A HANS device that is too large will not provide adequate restraint; one that is too small will be uncomfortable and may restrict movement.
HANS Angle — 20° vs 10°
HANS devices are available in different angles — typically 20° and 10°. The angle refers to how far the device sits away from your body:
- 20° — standard angle, suits most open-cockpit and upright seating positions. Correct for most circuit racing, rally, and Speedway applications
- 10° — for reclined seating positions (GT cars, sports cars with reclined seats)

Does My Helmet Need HANS Anchors?
Yes — your helmet must have HANS anchor posts (tether anchors) fitted to connect the HANS tethers. Not all helmets come with HANS anchors pre-installed. Check before purchasing.
