The AiM MyChron family is the standard kart dash and data logger for most circuits in New Zealand and Australia, and the most common question we get is simple: MyChron 6 or MyChron 5?

MyChron 6: The Current Generation

The MyChron 6 1T and MyChron 6 2T are AiM's current kart dash, lap timer, and data logger range. The 1T supports one temperature channel, while the 2T supports two, useful if you're monitoring both water and exhaust temperature, or running two cylinders. Both work through AiM's Race Studio 3 software for setup and post-session analysis.

MyChron5 S: The Previous Generation

The MyChron5 S is AiM's earlier kart logger, still sold and supported. It combines a GPS lap timer, configurable display, and internal data logger, recording GPS data at 10 Hz alongside logged signals for lap times, split times, and predictive lap information. It remains a capable unit for karting, and also sees use in speedway and other applications.

Which Should You Choose?

  • New to data logging or buying for the first time: the MyChron 6 range is the current model, so it's the safer long-term choice for parts, accessory compatibility, and ongoing software support.
  • Already running a MyChron5 S: there's no need to replace a working unit. Continue using your existing cables, sensors, and mounts, most of which are shared or have direct equivalents across the range.
  • Running two temperature sensors (e.g. water and exhaust): the MyChron 6 2T is built for this; the MyChron5 S and MyChron 6 1T are single-channel.
  • Budget-conscious: the MyChron5 S is typically the lower-cost option while stock remains available.

Is the MyChron 6 better than the MyChron 5?

The MyChron 6 is the current generation with ongoing long-term support, but the MyChron5 S remains a fully capable logger for karting. "Better" depends on your budget and whether you already own compatible accessories.

Can I use my MyChron5 accessories with a MyChron 6?

Some cables and sensors are shared or have direct equivalents, but not all are interchangeable. Check with us before assuming a MyChron5 accessory will fit a MyChron 6.

Do I need the 2T version?

Only if you're monitoring two temperature channels, such as water and exhaust together. Most single-cylinder karts running one temperature sensor are fine with the 1T or MyChron5 S.
