The Key Difference
UHF (Ultra High Frequency) operates in the 400–520 MHz range. VHF (Very High Frequency) operates in the 136–174 MHz range. In practical terms for motorsport:
- UHF has shorter range but better performance in built-up or hilly terrain — common in NZ and AU offroad environments
- VHF has longer range in open terrain but can struggle with terrain interference
- UHF CB (476–477 MHz) is licence-free in Australia and New Zealand for most applications
- VHF typically requires a licence in both countries
