Understanding the Standards: FIA 8859-2024 vs FIA 8860-2018 ABP

FIA 8859-2024 is the current FIA standard for circuit racing helmets and is accepted across virtually all categories sanctioned by MSNZ and Motorsport Australia — GT racing, touring cars, production cars, endurance events, stage rally, tarmac rally, hillclimb, and time attack. For the overwhelming majority of club and national-level motorsport competitors in NZ and Australia, FIA 8859-2024 is all you need.

FIA 8860-2018 ABP (Advanced Ballistic Protection) is the highest FIA helmet standard in existence. It is mandated by Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula E, and select top-tier international single-seater categories. The ABP designation adds specific ballistic fragment protection requirements over and above the base FIA 8860-2018 standard.

Unless your specific series regulations require FIA 8860-2018 or FIA 8860-2018 ABP, the RS7 Ultra Carbon’s FIA 8859-2024 certification fully satisfies your compliance requirements.

Practical rule of thumb: If your series rulebook says “FIA 8859” or “SA2025”, the RS7 Ultra Carbon is the right choice. If it mandates “FIA 8860”, you need the HP77.


Shell Architecture and Weight

Visor Systems

The RS7 Ultra Carbon uses Bell’s Smartlock visor system — a push-button one-handed release mechanism that exceeds FIA 8859-2024 visor retention requirements. The DSAF (double screen anti-fog) optical-grade visor is included as standard and delivers excellent clarity and fog resistance for demanding race conditions including early morning sessions and wet weather events.

The HP77 Evo IV uses an advanced visor retention system engineered to FIA 8860-2018 ABP retention standards, which are more demanding than FIA 8859-2024. In practical racing use, both systems are excellent. The HP77’s visor system is engineered to a higher test specification — but for national and club-level competitors, the RS7’s Smartlock is unlikely to be a limiting factor.


Ventilation
