Antenna & Aerial Installation, Tuning & Testing — Harris Race Radios
Antennas & Aerials — The Unsung Heroes of Radio Communication
A suitable radio can still underperform if its antenna is poorly installed, mismatched or positioned badly. Antenna selection, cable routing and testing matter in noisy, high-vibration motorsport environments.
Harris Race Radios™ installs and tests antennas with RF equipment. Rex Harris is an official New Zealand RSM Approved Radio Certifier with motorsport communications experience dating from 1975. His radio authority supports practical NZ advice; Australian operating requirements still depend on the exact equipment and use.
Not All Antennas Are Created Equal
Choose an antenna for the radio's actual authorised frequencies and vehicle application, not just the bracket shape.
- Gain — higher gain can suit flatter terrain but change the radiation pattern.
- Impedance matching — a mismatch can reduce performance and stress the transmitter.
- Mount location — ground plane, nearby metal, cable routing and connectors influence SWR and coverage.
- Cable quality — coax loss matters, especially at UHF frequencies.
- Testing — measure the installed system at its intended operating frequencies rather than assuming a bench reading covers the vehicle installation.
Professional Test Equipment — Verify the Installation
Our workshop uses RF test equipment including SWR and power meters to assess compatible antenna installations. Ask us what testing is appropriate for your exact system.

The Rugged Radios SWR-METER-D can help assess SWR, forward and reflected power and the frequency being tested when used within its specifications. Testing antenna match does not itself establish that a transmitting radio is certified or its frequencies are lawful.
Radio Spectrum Management — NZ Radio Requirements

Rex Harris is an official New Zealand RSM Approved Radio Certifier. We can advise on matching antennas and radios, programming and the requirements relevant to a particular New Zealand setup. An antenna test or our certification authority does not make every radio system supplied automatically lawful; check the exact radio's certification, frequencies, power and intended operation.
For Australia, check the exact transmitting radio and its programming against applicable ACMA requirements. Antenna installation and tuning do not turn a US-programmed or GMRS radio into locally certified UHF CB equipment. GMRS is not a local radio service in NZ or AU, and US-programmed and GMRS radios are not legal for operation here.

Rugged Radios Antenna Installation Guide
Mounting location, ground plane and cable routing affect antenna performance. Confirm requirements for your antenna design and vehicle before drilling or clamping.

- Mounting location — consider height, clearance, nearby metal and the required ground plane.
- Grounding — follow the antenna and mount manufacturer's instructions; different designs have different requirements.
- Cable routing — protect coax from damage and interference sources, and use suitable connectors and length.

Common Antenna Installation Mistakes
- Using a mount without the ground plane required by that antenna
- Kinked or crushed coax and poor connector terminations
- Mounting too close to roof racks, roll cages or other metal structures
- Skipping installed-system testing at the intended frequency
Frequently Asked Questions
What is SWR and why does it matter for my race radio?
SWR describes how well the antenna and feed line are matched to the transmitter. High reflected power can reduce performance and stress equipment. Follow your radio and antenna manufacturers' specifications for the acceptable reading.
Can Harris Race Radios tune my existing antenna?
We can discuss SWR measurement, connector and cable condition, mount position and suitable antennas. Contact us with the radio and installation details.
What antenna do I need for Finke Desert Race or AORC events?
Choose for the exact radio, permitted event frequencies, vehicle mount and conditions. Confirm your class rules with the organiser before transmitting.
Do you supply antennas for vehicles in Australia?
We supply antenna and mounting options to Australian customers. Ask about compatibility and local installation advice for your exact radio and vehicle.
What is the difference between a UHF and VHF antenna?
Antennas are designed for particular frequency ranges. Match the antenna to your radio's authorised operating frequencies; do not assume any UHF or VHF antenna fits every radio.
