The PTT-VM2 Velcro-mount pro-style push-to-talk switch places the transmit button on your steering wheel for use with a compatible car radio harness. Its red button, ABS housing and coiled lead provide a practical driver-to-pit control without drilling a mounting hole.

In circuit racing, a timely crew call about a fluid leak, flat tyre or loose panel can help a driver make an informed decision to pit before a problem becomes more costly. This switch is one part of that system: it operates the transmit function of a compatible harness and radio, rather than providing communications on its own.

Features and dimensions

  • Velcro mounting strap for steering-wheel installation.
  • ABS plastic switch housing with red push-to-talk button.
  • Sealed switch with a listed 1,000,000-cycle rating.
  • Twisted-pair urethane coiled cord with high-bend-test cable.
  • Three-pin connector for a compatible car harness PTT input.
  • Water-resistant PTT cover; do not treat this as a waterproof or immersion-rated assembly.
  • Lead length: approximately 2½ ft (0.76 m) uncoiled and 7 ft (2.13 m) extended.

Check harness compatibility before ordering

A three-pin plug alone does not establish compatibility. Confirm the socket, pin wiring and PTT switching requirements of your car harness. This switch is not a direct universal connection for every handheld radio or intercom. Send Harris Race Radios™ a photograph of your harness socket and the radio or intercom model if you need help matching it.

Position the button where it is accessible without compromising steering control. Route and secure the lead so it cannot snag, pull tight or interfere with the full steering movement or quick-release operation. Test the fitted system before going on track.

NZ and Australian race communications support

Harris Race Radios™ engineers, installs, repairs and supports motorsport communications systems. Rex Harris has motorsport radio experience dating from 1975 and is an NZ RSM Approved Radio Certifier. The team can help match the switch, harness, helmet audio and radio to your application.

For circuit racing, plan two-way driver-to-pit communications together with reception of the event's one-way race-control instructions, known in Australia as the Race Management Channel (RMC). A PTT switch does not add race-control reception or authorise transmission on a listen-only channel. Confirm the event channel and system configuration with the team.

Frequently asked questions

Does this PTT switch plug directly into any radio?

No. It is intended for a compatible car radio harness PTT input. Check the three-pin socket, wiring and switching requirements before ordering.

How does it mount to the steering wheel?

It uses a Velcro mounting strap. Position it within comfortable reach and secure the cable clear of steering movement and quick-release components.

How long is the lead?

The listed lead length is approximately 2½ ft (0.76 m) uncoiled and 7 ft (2.13 m) extended. Allow slack for steering movement rather than installing it under tension.

Is it waterproof?

The existing specification describes a sealed button and water-resistant cover, not a waterproof or immersion rating.

Does it provide race-control reception?

No. Race-control reception requires the appropriate radio system and event-specific configuration. This switch controls transmission through a compatible harness.
