About Harris Race Radios
Harris Race Radios — New Zealand & Australia's Professional Motorsport Equipment Specialists Since 1975
Harris Race Radios is a New Zealand and Australian motorsport equipment specialist, supplying professional drivers, teams, and enthusiasts with race-proven radios, safety equipment, data systems, and technical solutions across all forms of motorsport. From grassroots club racing through to international endurance competition, we provide complete motorsport systems and expert advice — not just products. We ship across New Zealand and Australia via NZC and DHL Express couriers.
Harris Race Radios First radio supply / support job was in 1975 at the Famous Marlboro Series Grand Prix, Gracefield, Lower Hutt, Wellington we supplied the race organisers with the radio needs, this association has continued to this day with the annual boxing day Suzuki Whanganui Motorcycle Races.
Harris Race Radios Motorsport Store was created out of frustration being unable to purchase or rent good quality motorsport radio communications equipment at reasonable prices. No one could fix anything or correctly advise how to make Helmets work properly with Radios or Intercoms, this was very frustrating. Aaron Harris was racing in MSNZ Championships events and Harris Race Radios enters the Australian market events around the world, Bathurst, Dubai, Barcelona, etc. During this time, he used a very much mixed bag of poor but expensive radio equipment resulting in poor communication results. Endurance events are race events where reliability and precision of good radio communications makes the difference between winning and losing. Rex Harris and Aaron Harris wanted to improve this for racers, and we formed Harris Race Radios in 2002.
Aaron at the 1998 Bathurst 1000 — finished 12th overall, 2nd in class at Bathurst 1000 1998.

Why Buy From Harris Race Radios?
Most motorsport equipment retailers sell gear. We use it, engineer it, and race with it — at club level, national championships, and international endurance events across New Zealand and Australia. That experience is built into every recommendation we make.
AiM & Alfano Data Systems — Cars, Karts, Boats & Motorbikes
Aaron Harris is an internationally recognised data engineer, having worked with professional race teams across Australasia and Europe. As the New Zealand distributor for AiM Sport — covering cars, karts (MyChron range), boats, and motorbikes — and the New Zealand distributor for Alfano — covering kart data logging, dashes, and tyre gauges — we know both systems in depth. When you buy a data logger or dash from us, you're getting setup advice from someone who has used these systems at Bathurst, Barcelona, and Dubai — not just someone who read the manual.
What sets Harris Race Radios apart is our unique professional engineering knowledge when it comes to AiM data systems. Aaron's background as a professional race and data engineer means we don't just sell AiM products — we configure them, interpret the data, and fault-find at a level most retailers simply cannot match. Whether it's sensor calibration, data channel setup, lap analysis, or diagnosing why your MyChron isn't reading correctly, we have the engineering expertise to solve it. This is knowledge built at Bathurst, Barcelona, Dubai, and circuits across Australasia — applied directly to helping New Zealand and Australian kart and car racers get the most from their AiM equipment.

Helmets — Fitting, Compatibility & In-Helmet Electronics
Not all helmets work equally well with radio and intercom systems. Microphone placement, shell geometry, and liner design all affect communication quality at speed. We have fitted and tested helmets across every brand we stock — Stilo, Roux, Schuberth, and Bell — and can advise exactly which helmet works best with your radio or intercom setup. Rex and Aaron are MSNZ-certified helmet examiners, and our helmet advice is trusted by competitors at circuits across New Zealand and Australia including Pukekohe, Hampton Downs, Taupo, Phillip Island, and Bathurst.
Rugged Radios — Off-Road & Circuit Communications
As the Australasian distributor for Rugged Radios, we don't just sell the product — we support it. We understand the firmware, the wiring, and the real-world performance demands of off-road and circuit motorsport in both NZ and AU conditions. If something isn't working, we can diagnose and fix it.
We also understand the radio regulation requirements of both RSM (New Zealand) and ACMA (Australia), and have the knowledge and programming equipment to ensure compliance. There is an important difference between the requirements for the USA and those for New Zealand and Australia — a significant amount of US-specification radio equipment is illegal to use in NZ or Australia. We can advise and ensure you are operating within the law.
BG Racing — Car Alignment, Setup & Safety
Race car setup is not just about speed — it's about consistency and safety. Our race engineering background with teams including Earl Bamber Motorsport, TekworkX, International Motorsport, Matt Stone Racing (V8 Supercars, Australia), and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia means we understand how alignment, geometry, and setup tools translate to on-track performance. We stock BG Racing products because we trust them from experience at the highest levels of Australasian motorsport.
All Products — Backed by Race Management & Engineering Experience
Aaron has held race engineer and team management roles at the highest levels of Australasian and Asia-Pacific motorsport — with Earl Bamber Motorsport, TekworkX, International Motorsport, Matt Stone Racing, and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, Asia-Pacific & New Zealand, through to the Bathurst 12 Hour and international endurance events. Rex is a qualified Radio Telecommunications Engineer and approved Radio Certifier for both New Zealand (RSM) and Australia (ACMA). When you contact us with a question, you're speaking to people who have solved that problem at a race track — not a call centre. We ship across New Zealand and Australia.
It quickly became apparent that the new Motorola motorsport digital radio equipment was showing up the deficiencies in all the other associated equipment. Harris Race Radios developed new wiring looms, aerials, helmet kits, cabling, earpieces and PTT. Even the radio box that holds the radio in the car was redeveloped, improving the performance.
We Are Always Improving, Getting Better.
As the speeds of the cars got even higher. The likes of TRS and GT cars, the Motorsport Communications required even higher standards, showing up the shortcomings of the standard helmet kits and wiring harnesses. Harris Race Radios created the “Professional Series” of equipment, developed in conjunction with our suppliers to solve this — professional equipment at reasonable prices.
Helmet compatibility with radio systems became a key focus. It became evident that some systems worked better than others, with the difference often being the type of helmet used. Helmets can badly distort the sound waves going to the microphone, and others don't allow the mic to be placed correctly in the racing helmet. Harris Race Radios started selling helmets that are compatible with radio systems — Roux Helmets USA, Schuberth, and Bell Helmets.
Rex Harris is a Qualified Radio Telecommunications Engineer, Approved Radio Certifier, and Engineer with access to all of the world's latest technology and the knowledge to use it effectively. We formed Harris Race Radios and made rapid progress in improving quality, reliability, and clarity at reasonable prices. Harris Race Radios have worked with world-leading radio suppliers to develop special firmware to mitigate the effects of high speeds, Doppler and picket fence effects, high noise, and high EMF interference peculiar to modern motorsport communication — we use these firmware systems exclusively on all of our radios.
