Rugged Radios Radio Comparison — R1, RDH16, RDH-X, RDM-DB & M1

Rugged Radios makes five distinct radio models, each designed for a different use case. Buying the wrong one is a common and frustrating mistake. This guide explains each model in plain language — what it does, who it's for, and when it's not the right choice.

This guide is written for NZ and AU buyers. Frequency band availability and licensing requirements differ from the US market — we've noted the relevant differences throughout.

Rugged R1 — UHF/VHF Dual Band Handheld

What It Is

The R1 is Rugged's entry-level handheld radio — a dual-band (UHF and VHF) analog and digital unit designed for motorsport and off-road use. It's compact, lightweight, and connects directly to Rugged's intercom systems via their standard connector.

Best For

  • Club-level circuit racing with a pit radio system
  • Rally co-driver radio communication
  • UTV and off-road group communication
  • Entry-level motorsport where budget matters

NZ & AU Considerations

The R1 operates on UHF and VHF frequencies. In NZ and AU, UHF CB (477 MHz) is the licence-free band for recreational use. The R1 can be programmed for UHF CB use — confirm programming with Harris Race Radios at time of purchase. For licensed business band or motorsport event frequencies, the R1 is also suitable with correct programming.

When It's Not the Right Choice

If you need waterproofing, digital-only operation, or higher power output, step up to the RDH-X or M1.

Rugged RDH16 — UHF Business Band Handheld

What It Is

The RDH16 is a business-band UHF handheld — digital and analog capable, designed for professional and semi-professional use. It offers more power and better build quality than the R1, with a focus on the business band frequency range.

Best For

  • Event and race organisation communication
  • Pit crew and team communication at national-level events
  • Any application requiring licensed business band operation
  • Users who need a more robust handheld than the R1

NZ & AU Considerations

The RDH16 operates on UHF business band frequencies. In NZ, business band operation requires a radio licence from Radio Spectrum Management (RSM). In AU, a licence from the ACMA is required. If you're operating on UHF CB (477 MHz) for recreational use, the R1 or RDH-X is a more appropriate choice.

When It's Not the Right Choice

If you don't hold or intend to obtain a business band licence, the RDH16 is not the correct radio. The R1 or RDH-X on UHF CB is the licence-free alternative.

Rugged RDH-X — Waterproof IP67 Handheld

What It Is

The RDH-X is Rugged's waterproof handheld — IP67 rated, meaning it can be submerged to 1 metre for 30 minutes. Digital and analog capable, available in both UHF CB and business band configurations. This is the go-to handheld for any application where dust, mud, or water exposure is a real risk.

Best For

  • Off-road racing and recreational 4WD where dust and water ingress is a concern
  • Motorcycle and adventure riding in wet conditions
  • Any motorsport application where the radio may be exposed to the elements
  • Offshore and water-based motorsport

NZ & AU Considerations

Available in UHF CB configuration (no licence required for recreational use in NZ and AU) or business band (licence required). Specify which you need at time of purchase — Harris Race Radios can advise on the correct configuration for your use case.

When It's Not the Right Choice

If waterproofing isn't a requirement and budget is a consideration, the R1 offers similar functionality at a lower price point.

Rugged RDM-DB — Digital & Analog Mobile Radio

What It Is

The RDM-DB is Rugged's digital and analog mobile radio — designed to be mounted in a vehicle rather than carried. It operates on both UHF and VHF, supports digital (DMR) and analog modes, and connects to Rugged's intercom systems. It's the most versatile mobile radio in the range.

Best For

  • UTV and side-by-side builds where a mounted mobile radio is preferred over a handheld
  • Rally and off-road vehicles requiring in-car radio communication
  • Any application where you want the radio integrated into the vehicle rather than handheld
  • Users who need both digital and analog capability in a single unit

NZ & AU Considerations

The RDM-DB can be programmed for UHF CB (licence-free recreational use) or business/motorsport band frequencies (licence required). It's the most popular mobile radio choice for NZ and AU UTV and off-road builds due to its flexibility. Harris Race Radios can supply pre-programmed for your intended use.

When It's Not the Right Choice

If you need a handheld rather than a mounted unit, the R1 or RDH-X is more appropriate. If you specifically need a race-focused waterproof mobile, consider the M1.

Rugged M1 — Race Series Waterproof Mobile

What It Is

The M1 is Rugged's flagship race mobile radio — waterproof, compact, and purpose-built for motorsport vehicle installation. VHF and UHF capable, digital and analog, with a focus on race-day reliability in harsh conditions. It's the radio you'll find in serious off-road race vehicles, trophy trucks, and competitive UTV builds.

Best For

  • Competitive off-road racing where reliability under extreme conditions is non-negotiable
  • Trophy truck and buggy builds
  • Any race vehicle where the radio may be exposed to water, dust, or vibration beyond what a standard mobile can handle
  • Serious UTV race builds where the RDM-DB isn't robust enough

NZ & AU Considerations

The M1 is the premium option and is priced accordingly. For most NZ and AU club-level competitors, the RDM-DB is sufficient. The M1 is the correct choice when you're competing at a level where radio failure has real consequences.

When It's Not the Right Choice

If you're running a recreational UTV or club-level competition, the RDM-DB delivers the same core functionality at a lower price. The M1's waterproofing and build quality are overkill for most NZ recreational use.

Quick Comparison

Model Type Waterproof Digital Best Use
R1 Handheld No Yes Club motorsport, UTV, rally
RDH16 Handheld No Yes Business band, event comms
RDH-X Handheld IP67 Yes Off-road, moto, wet conditions
RDM-DB Mobile No Yes UTV, rally, off-road vehicle install
M1 Mobile Yes Yes Competitive race, trophy truck

A Note on Licensing in NZ & AU

All Rugged Radios can be programmed for UHF CB (477 MHz) operation, which is licence-free for recreational use in both NZ and AU. For business band, motorsport event, or VHF frequencies, a licence is required. Harris Race Radios supplies all radios pre-programmed for your intended use — tell us what you need it for and we'll make sure it's set up correctly out of the box.
