Alfano 7 vs AiM MyChron 6 — Which GPS Kart Lap Timer Should You Choose?

Two GPS kart lap timers dominate the market: the Alfano 7 and the AiM MyChron 6. Both are excellent units. Both will give you accurate GPS lap times, temperature data, and post-session analysis. But they suit different types of kart racers — and choosing the wrong one can mean paying for features you don’t need, or missing features you do.

This guide is written by Harris Race Radios — the Official Alfano Dealer for New Zealand and an authorised AiM dealer. We sell both. Our recommendation is always based on what suits your karting, not which brand we prefer.

Data Transfer: Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi

The Alfano 7 uses Bluetooth 5.0 to transfer data to the Alfano ADA app on your smartphone, tablet, or PC. The AiM MyChron 6 uses Wi-Fi to transfer data to AiM Race Studio 3.

In practice, both work well at the track. Wi-Fi can be faster for large data files, but Bluetooth 5.0 is reliable and doesn’t require a network. For most club and competitive kart racers, the difference is negligible.

Wireless Peripheral Sensors

This is where the Alfano 7 has a clear advantage. The Alfano 7 uses a proprietary Wireless/IR connection to communicate directly with Alfano peripheral sensors — including the Alfano TyreControl Junior 2 tyre pressure gauge and logger — without any cables.

The AiM MyChron 6 does not have an equivalent wireless peripheral system. Tyre pressure monitoring requires a separate, independent system.

Data Analysis Software

Both units have capable PC analysis software:

  • Alfano ADA — clean, straightforward interface. Lap comparison, temperature overlays, GPS track mapping. Well suited to club and competitive karting.
  • AiM Race Studio 3 — more advanced analysis tools, larger user community, and broader compatibility with other AiM devices (dashboards, data loggers, cameras). Better suited to drivers who want to go deep into data or who use other AiM products.

Ecosystem and Expandability

If you already own AiM products — or plan to move into circuit racing with an AiM dash logger — the MyChron 6 fits naturally into that ecosystem. AiM Race Studio 3 works across the full AiM product range.

If you’re building an Alfano system — lap timer, tyre pressure gauge, temperature sensors — the Alfano 7 ecosystem is tightly integrated and wireless-first. The TyreControl Junior 2 pairs directly with the Alfano 7 without cables, which is a genuine advantage in a busy pit lane.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the Alfano 7 if:

  • You want wireless tyre pressure integration in one system
  • You prefer Bluetooth data transfer without needing a Wi-Fi network
  • You’re building an Alfano ecosystem from scratch
  • You want a clean, straightforward data analysis experience

Choose the AiM MyChron 6 if:

  • You already use AiM Race Studio 3 or other AiM products
  • You want the most advanced PC data analysis tools available for karting
  • You plan to move into circuit racing with AiM dash loggers
  • You prefer Wi-Fi data transfer

Our Recommendation

For most NZ kart racers — club, competitive, Rotax, KZ, arrive-and-drive — the Alfano 7 2T is the stronger all-round package. The wireless tyre pressure integration alone sets it apart, and the Alfano ADA software is more than capable for the vast majority of karting data analysis.
