GPS08 Module Setup Guide
AiM GPS08 Module Setup Guide
This guide explains how to install and configure the AiM GPS08 module for MyChron 5 and MyChron 6 systems. The GPS08 provides highly accurate 25 Hz GPS data for speed, lap timing, and track mapping used by kart racers across New Zealand and Australia.
What the GPS08 module does
The AiM GPS08 module provides:
- High‑accuracy 25 Hz GPS sampling
- Automatic track recognition for most NZ & AU circuits
- Speed, position, and racing line data
- Improved lap timing accuracy
- Start/finish line detection
What you need
- AiM GPS08 module
- Double‑sided tape or mounting pad
- Zip ties
- MyChron 5 or MyChron 6 dash
1. Choosing the correct mounting location
The GPS08 must have a clear view of the sky. The best mounting location is:
- The nassau panel (top surface)
- High on the bodywork
- Away from metal brackets
- Away from ignition wiring
Do NOT mount:
- Under the steering wheel
- Behind the seat
- Near the spark plug lead
- Under metal bodywork
2. Mounting the GPS08 module
- Clean the mounting surface on the nassau panel.
- Apply double‑sided tape or a mounting pad to the GPS08.
- Place the module with the AiM logo facing upward.
- Secure the cable with zip ties along the chassis.
3. Connecting the GPS08
- Route the cable along the frame rails.
- Keep the cable away from the spark plug lead and exhaust.
- Plug the connector into the EXP port on the MyChron.
4. GPS lock indicators
The LED on the GPS08 shows its status:
- Red: Searching for satellites
- Green: GPS lock acquired
- Flashing green: High‑accuracy lock
Lock time is typically 5–15 seconds in NZ & AU conditions.
5. Track auto‑detection
The GPS08 automatically recognises most kart tracks in New Zealand and Australia, including:
- Hampton Downs
- Manfeild
- KartSport Hamilton
- KartSport Wellington
- Tokoroa
- Ruapuna
- Eastern Creek
- Todd Road
- Ipswich
If auto‑detect fails, you can manually select the track in AiM RaceStudio 3.
6. Testing the GPS08
With the kart outside:
- Turn on the MyChron.
- Wait for the GPS icon to turn green.
- Drive one full lap to confirm lap timing.
7. Troubleshooting
- No GPS lock: Move the module higher or away from metal.
- Slow lock: Check for interference from ignition wiring.
- Wrong track: Complete one full lap or select manually.
- Dropouts: Re‑route cable away from spark plug lead.
