MyLaps TR2 Speedway Transponder

The MyLaps TR2 is the current-generation rechargeable transponder for speedway racing in New Zealand. If your track uses MyLaps timing — and the vast majority of NZ speedway venues do, including Palmerston North, Whanganui, Western Springs, Baypark, and Ruapuna — this is the transponder your class requires. Accurate to the millisecond, IP67 waterproof, and managed entirely through the Speedhive app on your phone.

Harris Race Radios is an authorised MyLaps dealer for New Zealand, supplying genuine MyLaps transponders direct through the official MyLaps supply chain. When you buy from us, you're buying the real thing with full warranty support — not a grey import.

What Is a Transponder and Why Do You Need One?

A transponder is a small electronic device mounted to your race vehicle that communicates with timing loops embedded in the track surface. Every time you cross a loop, the system records your passage to the millisecond — generating your lap times, race results, and heat scores that appear in your Speedhive account and on the official results sheet. Without a transponder, your laps cannot be officially timed and you cannot be classified in results. Most NZ speedway clubs require competitors to carry their own transponder — rental units are increasingly unavailable at club level.

Installation

Mount the TR2 transponder as vertically as possible on your vehicle, no more than 60 cm above the ground. Use the TR2 Holder for a secure, repeatable mount. For speedway applications, protect the unit from direct stone chip impact where possible — the IP67 rating handles water and mud, but avoid mounting in a position exposed to direct debris strikes from other vehicles.

Getting Started

  1. Download the Speedhive app and create or log in to your MyLaps account
  2. Register your TR2 transponder using the serial number or Bluetooth pairing

Subscription Information

MyLaps TR2 transponders require an active subscription to function at timed events. Subscriptions are purchased and renewed through the Speedhive app. The unlimited warranty on the TR2 is only valid while a subscription is active — if your subscription lapses, the warranty reverts to standard terms. Contact Harris Race Radios if you need help understanding subscription options before purchasing.

Common Mistakes When Buying a MyLaps Transponder

  • Buying the wrong variant. The TR2 Speedway is not interchangeable with the TR2 Car/Bike or TR2 Kart. Check with your club timekeeper before ordering if you're unsure which system your track runs.
  • Forgetting to budget for a subscription. The transponder purchase does not include a subscription. Factor in the cost of a 2-year or 5-year subscription when comparing prices.
  • Buying second-hand without checking subscription status. A second-hand TR2 with a lapsed subscription loses its unlimited warranty. Always verify subscription status before buying used.
  • Mounting too high. The TR2 must be mounted no more than 60 cm above the ground. Mounting higher than this will result in missed reads at the timing loop.
  • Not registering the transponder before race day. Register your unit in the Speedhive app and confirm your transponder ID with your club timekeeper before your first event — not on the morning of.
