Hans Devices

Hans Products

What are Hans Devices?

Stand21 were the original Hans Device manufacturers and is the original brand of frontal head restraints. To this day they still remain as the most popular frontal head restraint. Hans devices are attached to you by the posts on your helmet. Hans neck braces are designed to keep your head from whipping in a crash. Including the often fatal basilar skull fracture, and prevents excessive rotational movement as a secondary protection. All Hans devices are FIA or SFI approved devices.

Hans are ‘U’ shaped devices that sit on your shoulders and go over your chest and wraps around the rear of your neck. This makes removing them while still attached to your helmet possible. One of the brands we offer is Stand 21 and they have incorporated a number of comfort changes that are not available on other brands.

Where do they sit?

The HANS device is located on your body by the racing harnesses of the car. There are dedicated HANS harnesses with a narrower two-inch shoulder strap, however Stand 21 recommends a three-inch harness as the more harnesses you have on your device the better. You do not require a specific HANS harness for use with HANS devices. The geometry of the harnesses is important for the operation of the HANS in an accident. The recommended fitting instructions are supplied with each device to help you in setting the harnesses and seat.

The Design

The design of all the Stand 21 models (excluding the Hi-Tec), have ergonomic chest yolks which fit around your collarbone making them more comfortable to use. The chest yolks have soft Nomex pads that further increase the comfort levels. The pads are filled with air and can be pumped up to give the ultimate comfort levels.

There are different models which are priced by the materials used in the devices construction. The more you pay for the relevant device the lighter it becomes. This becomes a consideration for racing purposes where the overall weight of a driver and equipment becomes important.

Frontal Head Restraints (FHR Devices)

Here at Harris Race Radios we supply a range of frontal head restraints to suit every safety need and budget. In most forms of motorsport it is now compulsory to use a frontal head restraint device. These frontal head restraints (FHR) are a must for safety in any motorsport car. They will protect your neck in the unfortunate case of a frontal collision.

There are two main types of frontal head restraints on the market and they are designed by different manufacturers to an FIA homologated safety test. These devices are designed to stop the head thrusting forward too far which causes a severe whiplash back and it’s this rearwards movement that actually breaks your neck. FHR devices aren’t designed to prevent damage from a side impact and even though some can provide a level of assistance. Because of this it’s important to use a seat with ‘wings’ or side head restraint for adequate protection. These are currently not mandatory.

Whichever frontal head restraint you choose, the principle of operation will be the same. It attaches to your helmet via posts that are mounted with a required 6mm bolt and attach via a tether to the FHR device. This base sits around your shoulder area and will allow the belts to pass over a HANS device, holding it firmly in place. It’s important that the belts are firmly on top of the FHR as during an impact the belts are what holds it in place.

Simpson Neck Brace

These restraints are a great device that offers you full manoeuvrability. Comfort and safety were key features at the focus when designing these products. All Simpsons neck braces are SFIA or FIA approved devices. These devices sit over your back and shoulders.

These frontal head restraints are also designed to attach to the helmet. This makes for easy movement in and out of the car while reducing the risk of getting caught up on other equipment inside the car.

We also have female fitting simpsons specifically designed for our female racers.

Helmet Attachments

All frontal head restraints attach to a drivers helmet allowing them to still have normal head and neck movement. There is a range of different attachments depending on the FHR you choose to purchase. There are Hans posts, Simpson fitting kits, Hans sliding kits, and necksgen helmet post hardware.

Hans Helmet Combos

We have a range of helmet and Hans combos so you can get the best deal on both products. All combos include a hans compatible helmet, hans posts, and a hans device. This is the perfect head and neck safety package for any driver. These deals are customisable and we can provide many add-ons if you require them including integrated water drink tube with quick disconnect, complete radio gear with noise-cancelling microphone and speaker pods.

Neck Donuts / Neck Braces

We have a range of neck donuts to suit any driver’s safety budget. We have three donuts, with one having an SFI rating. These are foam rings that increase safety in the event of a crash and decrease the risk of whiplash.
